The UK Government has been working on ways to tackle waste crime for years. Their goal is to protect communities and the environment while also supporting a circular economy where resources don’t go to waste. A key part of this is the Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) service. We want to have a closer look at it here because it has just entered its next phase. Then, if you want to arrange reliable skip hire in Hartlepool or other parts of the North East, you can rely on us.
What is it?
The DWT does what it says on the tin; it provides a service that records key details about different types of waste digitally. It improves record keeping, providing clearer details of where it comes from, what is in loads, where it goes, and how it is processed.
Ultimately, this provides two massive benefits. Firstly, it means it is easier to audit businesses and check what they are doing. Even things like roadside checks will be easier; inspectors can simply check the contents of a load against the information and see where it is going. It can also make it easier to determine when operators are carrying higher volumes of waste than they should be.
Secondly, the DWT will make it easier to monitor problematic types of waste. They will be able to see where they originate and where they go. Critically, this makes it easier to manage potential local environmental issues and impacts on communities. Speak to us if you want to arrange skip hire in Hartlepool or other areas in the region.
Phases
The decision was made to introduce DWT slowly before expanding it in phases. Doing this would help to build a better service that reflects the needs and requirements. Phase 1 began in 2025 with a private beta phase of a small number of waste receivers. There was then a public beta phase early in 2026, expanding to allow all waste receiving site operators to participate.
We’re now entering the key part of Phase 1. From 1st October DTW is mandatory in England and Wales. This will expand to include Scotland and Northern Ireland in January 2027.
Phase 2 is also now underway as of autumn 2026. It expands DWT to cover waste carriers, brokers, and dealers. Again it begins with a private beta phase before expanding to a public one in 2027. Critically, it will then become mandatory from October 2027.
